I haven’t had a console since I sold my NES in the early 90s. My Gameboy bought at the time was subsequently stolen. I’ve had too much fun with computers to jump on the console bandwagon – until now.

The Wii might not come with the best graphics; it’s a fact well known for those who know it well that many of the games for this console are sub-par in almost every department, but the good games are really good. What made me decide to purchase the Wii was the few really good games it had and the balance board. I could enjoy the games while the missus would use the board.

Installation was very easy. All the required cables and adapters were present, however, at first I couldn’t find the console! I was surprised how small it was when I finally found and unpacked it. Now it fits neatly next to the TiVo and the bluray player.

Upon completion of the all-important procedure of setting the time, date and the nickname for the console I was presented by the main menu in tiled windows. Each window represents a channel, so you have the game disc in one window, shopping channel in another, photo channel in the third etc. I quickly loaded up Super Mario Galaxy just to try out the controls. It felt very different and a bit tricky at first but I got the hang of it. The controls really are brilliant, especially when I played The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii). No HD means the graphics become a little bit “fuzzy” and it’s noticeable on my, rather large, TV. Zelda uses that, however, to its advantage.

Another selling-point that attracted me to the Wii was their Shopping Channel. For a small fee I could download and play all the classics. The games I was looking for were all there, perhaps a bit overpriced though. That is something I’ve noticed with most Wii games – they’re horrendously expensive! I was lucky to pick up Twilight Princess off Amazon for a tenner and Ebay has good deals from time to time as well. What really put me off was the elevator music played in the background while I was browsing. It felt like I’d put my brain in a blender after a while. Luckily my TV is equipped with a mute button which came in handy. I had a Nintendo points card so I topped-up my account, very easy and straight-forward process, and browsed through the lists while the muted elevator music was playing in the background.

The News and Forecast channels are fun additions but nothing crucial. BBC iPlayer is available too but I can’t see myself using that either since I have it elsewhere.

Nintendo is presenting us with the Wii-U next year and supposedly this console will be obsolete by then. To me that does not really matter because, like I said before, the good games ARE good and will offer entertainment long after the successor to Wii is released.

I briefly gave the balance board a whirl but I haven’t used it properly with any games yet, there is one included however and I will get round to testing it soon. The board is sturdy and quite large.

The Nintendo Wii is a console on its way out, I’m not so sure the Wii-U will be a worthy successor, I suppose the jury will be out contemplating that one for a while. For me and my family it suits our gaming needs, the little one will have a game or two whenever I can find a good deal, and it will hopefully last us 2-3 years.

The new Wii Console is surprisingly small and neat. Easy to set up. Can’t give Wii Fit 5 stars for fun as exercise is rarely 5 stars worth of fun. However, if it moves my extra tonnage it will have done its job. Very pleased with purchase and look forward to buying really fun games.

Do not assume this is a normal Wii like I did!, 10 Dec 2011

I pre-ordered this and assumed it would be the average Wii console which has Gamecube backwards compatibility and controller ports. When I got it I was very surprised to see on the box that this edition does not have this functionality. Why exactly there is no mention of this in the product description I can only guess?

Apparently Nintendo thought they could remove this functionality and bundle in more games to make it a more attractive package. I just need the hardware, the games included don’t matter. And this is a bit of a flop as I could buy a previous model and the wii fit board for approx the same price, if not less.

On this page it doesn’t state it’s a new version of the console, it doesn’t say it’s the “Family Edition” and it doesn’t say “Note: The Wii console included in this bundle is not backwards compatible with Gamecube discs or accessories”. Go figure!

If you play your Wii only horizontally, only play Wii games and want a slimmed down less functional device then buy this version. I’m returning mine and getting the previous model which has gamecube support. Thanks Amazon.
